What we do Watch and direct the movement of aircraft on the ground and in the air, using radar, computers, or visual reference's We issue landing and takeoff instruction to pilots. Alert airport response staff, in the event of an aircraft emergency.

Work Environment Air traffic controllers typically work in control towers or in office’s. Approach/departure controllers often work in semi dark rooms, otherwise it would be hard to see screen’s that show where the planes are in the world.

Education and Training Some schools offer specific programs that have 2- or 4-year degrees that are designed to prepare students for a career in air traffic control. Courses focus on subjects that are fundamental’s to aviation. Topics include airspace clearances, reading maps, federal regulations, and other things.

Hours of Work/Salary The average salary of a average air traffic controller in 2012 was 122,530. The starting salary for new controllers undergoing training was $17,803 in New recruits work from 6am -9pm and later if needed, and then more experienced come from 9pm – 6am.
