THE ROLE CHEMISTRY HAS IN OUR LIFE CHEMISTRY’S RELATIONSHIP TO GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE

What is chemistry’s role in your life? Synthetic Material Pharmaceuticals Cosmetics Cleaning Products Industrial Processes Need pictures of some of these Items in the slide

Climate Change UV radiation travels from the sun through space and strikes surfaces on the earth Radiant energy is absorbed and some transferred into thermal energy which radiates back out into space Some of that heat is trapped in molecules of the atmosphere (CO 2, H 2 0, CH 4 ) These gases increase the temperature of the atmosphere Need a graphic that shows global warming

GREENHOUSE GASES CO 2, H 2 0, CH 4, and NO are greenhouse gases They hold heat because of the flexibility of the bonds in the molecule Stretching, bending, twisting, rotation, and vibration of bonds allows kinetic energy to be stored Nitrogen and oxygen has do not have the same flexibility as the green house gases.

THIS IS A SUGGESTION PAGE I might make the last slide up into two slides and add some graphics. Show the flexibility of a carbon dioxide, water, or methane bond (1 ST SLIDE) Show how nitrogen and oxygen do not have that flexibility. (2 ND SLIDE)

Nutrient Cycles The exchange of elements from biotic to abiotic reserves in a ecosystem Those elements that are cycled are water, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous. The imbalance of nutrients with these cycles presents problems for the ecosystem Human activity has made a great impact on these cycles.

NITROGEN CYLCE Air --- nitrogen gas (NO x ) Soil – nitrates and ammonia –Nitrogen Fixation Biotic – Proteins and Nucleic Acids Water – nitrates Need a graphic of the nitrogen cycle

CARBON CYCLE Lithosphere – historically are the two largest reservoirs for carbon Lithosphere – carbonates, fossil fuels Hydrosphere – carbonates and dissolved carbon dioxide gas Biotic – carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids Air – carbon dioxide and methane Need a graphic of the carbon cycle
