Types of Travel Risk  Weather or natural disaster  Civil Unrest  Acts of Terrorism  Exposure to disease or medical emergency  Technology or widespread utility failures  Lost or stolen documents  Delayed or cancelled flights  Oversold or unavailable accommodations 2

Mitigation Steps  Register your international travel with ORM  Consider supplemental travel insurance  Have pre-defined departmental procedures in place  Engage your travelers in pre-trip safety planning  Provide pre-departure information and risk assessments 3

Mitigation Steps  Know available resources  Have a Plan B  Know where ALL your travelers are at any given time –Ability to locate and alert –Obtain traveler’s emergency contact details prior to departure 4

Enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) STEP is a service of the Bureau of Consular Affairs, US Department of State  It is FREE  Provides information about safety conditions in your destination country 6

Trip Preparation  Valid passport  Visa entrance requirements  Vaccine requirements (UO Health Center)  Copies of passport  Airline/travel contact information  Confirmation numbers  Read security bulletins for your destination  Register with US embassy or consulate 7

Travel Insurance Options Standard Insurance Coverages – –MedEx Travel Assist: Eligible if you are enrolled in basic life insurance through UO/PEBB. If you or a dependent becomes ill while traveling 100 or more miles from home. –Does not cover security evacuation (war/political unrest or natural disaster) 8

UO Supplemental International Travel Insurance When “study abroad insurance” is highly recommended: –Traveling with students –Concerns about destination (natural disaster, security) –Medical concerns/expenses (expenses may be paid up front by this insurer)  Economical ($1.91 per day/1 week minimum) 9

Considerations for international travel with students  Strongly recommend supplemental insurance  Have a plan  Have a contact  Have a release of liability/waiver  Recommend United Educators resources 10
