Tests of a 10cm by 10cm triple GEM detector

Detector (3/2/2/2 mm, 10cm by 10cm) is equipped with a 2D readout board, which has 4 Panasonic connectors. A filter with 100kOhm*3/2.2nF*2 is at the HV input. Put X-ray focus on one quadrant (with a 2 mm collimator), and connect 2 connectors with 128 strips combined for each. This signal is added together to pico-ameter. Count rate, current on strips, spectrum can be recorded simultaneously. Bottom of 3 rd foil Preamp. Linear amp. Scope MCA DiscriminatorScaler Readout strips (128*2) Pico-Ameter Setup description 2

Threshold 50 mV Background count rate is high, among which the cosmic ray count rate is about 200 Hz at highest tested voltage (~4260 V on drift). Rate for X-ray (at 10kV/5uA) is measured. Plateau rate (~46kHz) starts at 660 uA through the divider. Comparing with the X ray, cosmic ray counts are very small (but they are subtracted). Counting rate 3

Spectra of X-ray at 10kV/5uA Vd=3600V I=664.5uA Vd=3695V I=682uA Vd=3790V I=699.5uA Vd=3885V I=717uA Vd=3980V I=734.55uA Vd=4074V I=752.1uA 4

Spectrum peak vs. detector current (X-ray at 10kV/5uA) Statistic errors less than marker size 5

Current measured from readout strips (Cosmic ray) Vd=3980V, I=734.5uA Vd=4264V I=787.1uA Cosmic signals show currents of 0.04~0.09 nA Bkg current at low voltage Bkg current at high voltage 6

Current measured from readout strips (X-ray at 10kV/5uA) Vd=4122V At each tested voltage point, current is stable! The above two plots are for the highest tested point (Vd=4122V). Current on strip vs. current in divider is shown on the right. Statistic errors less than marker size 7

Gain curve 8

Test of the X ray gun – voltage scan at 5 uA (Vd=3980V, I=734.5uA) X Ray at 10 kVX Ray at 16 kV X Ray at 20 kV X Ray at 24 kV Peak shifts to the left and finally disappears as voltage increases! Current on strips is monitored (next slide), did not go higher Xray voltage for the safe of the detector. 9

X Ray at 10 kVX Ray at 16 kV X Ray at 20 kVX Ray at 24 kV Current reached ~0.47 uA ! 10 Test of the X ray gun – voltage scan at 5 uA (Vd=3980V, I=734.5uA)

Test of the X ray gun – voltage scan at 5 uA (Vd=3695V, I=682uA) X Ray at 10 kVX Ray at 20 kVX Ray at 30 kV X Ray at 40 kVX Ray at 50 kV 11 pedestal peak X ray bump

Test of the X ray gun – current scan at 10 kV (Vd=3980V, I=734.5uA) X Ray at 10 uAX Ray at 30 uA X Ray at 60 uA X Ray at 90 uA Again, peak shifts to the left as current increases!! 12

X Ray at 10 uAX Ray at 30 uA X Ray at 60 uA X Ray at 90 uA Current reached ~350 nA at 90uA in X ray gun. 13 Test of the X ray gun – current scan at 10 kV (Vd=3980V, I=734.5uA)

Spectrum peak vs. Xray currentCurrent through strips vs. Xray current Test of the X ray gun (Vd=3980V, I=734.5uA) 14 Spectrum peak vs. Xray voltageCurrent through strips vs. Xray voltage Statistic errors less than marker size

15 An explanation?: ->Consider a GEM detector’s energy resolution 16-18%, the RMS for 10keV X Rays is keV. ->When Xray gun voltage >=20kV, the energy spectrum is very wide. It has peaks of 8-15keV with gaps of ~2keV. ->So that the detector can not really “see” the peaks.
