For God So Loved the World Lesson 1 - The Scheme of Redemption Original Material and Presentation by Ken Craig Edited with permission by Rob Slover

Movie: The Passion of the Christ definition of “passion” Origination – literally “suffering”, Traditional - “the sufferings of Jesus on the cross or after the last supper” Movie director Gibson uses “passion” in the traditional sense to refer to the suffering of Christ

Why did Jesus die? Why did Jesus have to die? Who was responsible for His death? How shall I respond to Jesus? The Suffering of the Christ is a single-scene in a much larger story – The Redemption of Mankind!

“What does this exercise in brutality have to do with Christianity? I don’t know.” David Eddlestein National Public Radio

The world truly cannot make sense of Christ’s death…..and many hunger to hear the story explained But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, But do this with gentleness and respect, 1Peter 3:15

Jesus Suffering and The Gospel The gospel or “Good News” – John 3:16 “For God so loved the world He gave…...” – He gave his son to die!

Jesus Suffering and The Gospel The gospel or “Good News” For God so loved the world …. John 3:16 “Go into all the world and preach the gospel...” Mark 16:15

The Gospel “…....when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, taking vengeance on those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will suffer everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power...” 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9

The Gospel “I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be accursed (eternally condemned)! ” ----Galatians 1:6-12 A DIFFERENT GOSPEL

The Old Testament and The Gospel What part does the Old Testament Play in God’s precious plan, the Gospel?

Galatians 3:24 TEACHER TO BRING US TO CHRIST JUSTIFIED BY FAITH OLD LAW Also Rom. 15:4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. 1 Cor. 10:11 Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction

SPIRITUAL UNION GOD FELLOWSHIP

GOD God exhibits an attitude of abhorrence and hatred to all that is wrong “You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and cannot look upon wickedness.” Hab 1:13

GOD Cannot co-exist with sin “Your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden his face from you.” Is 59:2

GOD SPIRITUAL DEATH “you were dead in your trespasses and sins” Eph 2:1

Romans 3:23...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Romans 6:23... for the wages of sin is death DEATH SIN

Romans 3:23...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God The PRICE for SIN DEATH LIFE “without the shedding of blood there can be no remission of sins.” Heb. 9:22

A Just God 2 Peter 2:4-6,9 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; 5 and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter... 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment SIN DEATH

The Penalty We deserve to die for breaking the laws of the God of the universe!!! SIN DEATH

God’s Justice Demands Death as Payment for Sin Death Man finds himself in a very desperate situation: Man has broken the laws of the God of the universe, this has separated him from God, and the penalty of death hangs over his head (which he cannot pay!) by a just God!

BLOOD MERCY

Atonement Kaphar to cover, purge, make an atonement, make reconciliation, ……….

What Made it Work? FAITH Hebrews 11:6

The fundamental question of the gospel is: When? At what point in my faith do I die to sin? do I die with Christ? When does God view me as uniting with Christ in his death? crucified with Christ?

Romans 6 1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace might increase? 2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

Romans 6 5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him.

Romans 6 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin, once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 In the same way count yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey its lusts, …. 17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,

v4 buried by baptism into his death that as Christ was raised from the dead … so we too might walk in newness of life. v5 united with Him in the likeness of His death
