TASK 2 – IDENTIFYING FAULTS

PROBLEM 1 – “MY COMPUTER WON’T TURN ON” Reason: The plug socket could possibly be faulty itself not just the computer. Wires could be damaged but also not plugged in. The fuse could have blown. Power supply unit could be faulty. Advice: Firstly, ensure the pc is plugged in and turned on. Once that has done, ensure all wires are connected into the pc securely. Secondly, check the fuse then plug the pc into another socket. If it still continues to not turn on it could be your power supply unit. Therefore, get it changed as it covers your warranty.

PROBLEM 2 – “MY COMPUTER IS RUNNING SLOW” Reason: One common problem could be there is too much stuff downloaded e.g. games, also the software that is running at that current moment. Another reason could be the software and operating system you are using with the computer which is causing it to run slow. Finally, another problem with the computer could be there are viruses/ spyware that have not been cleared off the computer. Advice: Firstly, I would suggest that you go into your computer and check your RAM and clear any downloads and remove anything that you don’t need. Secondly, look at your message box to see if your firewall has detected any viruses. If you do have a virus, I advise you to download a package and use it. When all is done, restart your computer. However, if its not a virus then you might need to upgrade your RAM to something more compatible.

PROBLEM 3- “MY COMPUTER HAS STARTED TO STUTTER AND IT WON’T LET ME USE CERTAIN SOFTWARE” Reason: There is only one explanation why a PC will stutter and its because your computer has detected a virus. Advice: Firstly I would advise you to activate your firewall. Therefore you can investigate further what the problem is. Secondly, restore the computer and back up files needed when running a security scan. When this has finished, back the computer up to its last update.

PROBLEM 4 – “HOW TO SPOT A VIRUS” Reason: There are a variety of reasons why a computer might have a virus. One reason being that you have downloaded too many pages, games, videos etc. off the internet and saved them. You have opened an attachment and which resulted to a spam message. Finally, another reason why your computer can get a virus is your pc might not have the latest updates. Advice: Usually, one way to spot a virus is if the PC itself is stuttering or making unusual sounds. Another way to detect a virus is checking your firewall messages to see if any form of virus has been detected. If it is a virus, here is the procedure for removing it: 1) Before starting the virus removal process, make sure that all of your important data is backed up 2) Check to ensure that other factors aren't causing your problem for example memory, adware, storage. 3) Run a security can on your computer so you can identify what the problem is 4) You should already have an antivirus program installed, but if you don't there are a variety of both free and commercial products are available. Most paid programs have a trial period that will allow you to scan and remove viruses 5) You will also need a few anti-malware programs. These programs may pick up things that your antivirus passes over.

PROBLEM 5 – “WHEN MY COMPUTER BOOTS UP, IT DOES NOTHING BUT BEEP” Reason: There is only one explanation for this and that is your PC is having an issue with the long term memory (RAM) Advice: Firstly, ensure the RAM is connected in as the clips could become lose. If the component is connected in but is still beeping then it might be because you need to upgrade the RAM by buying a bigger and better one.

ESD (ELECTRO STATIC DISCHARGE) What is ESD? Electro static discharge is the release of static electricity when two objects come into contact. This then an electrical short, or dielectric breakdown. A build-up of static electricity can be caused by turbocharging or by electrostatic induction. This then causes an electric shock. How do we prevent ESD? The most obvious way to prevent ESD is wear protective clothing and equipment. As seen on the diagram: Anti static plug Anti static cable ESD Mat Anti static wristband

SCENARIO My client wants to play COD and GTA using his computer My Upgrade Required/Recommended: Firstly, I would recommend you to get a decent quality graphics card if you want to have good graphics when playing. Secondly, I would recommend you to upgrade your RAM to a bigger memory as you will be saving these games. You can upgrade your processor with a higher and faster ability so it’s not slow and lags. What Components Recommended: Processor RAM Source and Price of Component/s:

Problem Reported The computer switches on with a blue screen but beeps. Issue Identified There is only one explanation, the RAM might not have the clips securely fitted in or it needs replacing. Issues Resolved Push the RAM in ensuring it is securely fitted. However the computer still beeped. Therefore needs to be replacing with a Kingston 2G.
