A Confident Life August 24

Think About It … In what kinds of situations have you felt intimidated? Some people – even believers – feel intimidated at the prospect of approaching God! Today we look at why we can draw close to God without fear or intimidation.

Listen for how it is possible for sinners to enter the presence of a holy God. Hebrews 10:19-23 (NIV) Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, [20] by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, [21] and since we have a great priest over the house of God,

Listen for how it is possible for sinners to enter the presence of a holy God. [22] let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. [23] Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

Know the Source of Confidence Why did the author say that those under the new covenant could draw near to God? Consider the reference to the “blood of Jesus” as the means by which Christians could enter God’s presence. Think about why the blood sacrifice fits into this picture. – He was writing to Jews … they were familiar with blood sacrifices – They knew an animal had to die, substituting its death for that of a sinful person – God’s righteousness and justice had to be satisfied in order for us to continue to exist at all … let alone in His presence

Know the Source of Confidence What might keep a believer today from approaching God confidently? What does having your heart “sprinkled to cleanse (you) from a guilty conscience” do to make a difference in your confidence before God? How can we express confidence as we draw near to God in prayer and worship?

Listen for what should happen when we are together in church. Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV) And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. [25] Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Stay in Church According to this passage, how should believers help one another? Why are good deeds or good works an outgrowth of being concerned for one another? What are some reasons church members might neglect church attendance?

Stay in Church What is the danger of falling into a habit of irregular participation in church activities? What about the phrase “the Day approaching” in verse 25? Why is it important to encourage one another in this context?

Listen for what will happen to God’s enemies. Hebrews 10:26-29 (NIV) If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, [27] but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. [28] Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died

Listen for what will happen to God’s enemies. without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. [29] How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?

Take Sin Seriously What words or phrases tell us here about why deliberate sin is dangerous? How does verse 29 describe deliberate sin? Agree or disagree? – “Sin is not that big a deal because God has already forgiven all my sins.” AgreeDisagree

Take Sin Seriously Consider temptation … why is being tempted not a sin? How is our ability to resist sin’s temptations related to our confidence in Jesus?

Listen for the kinds of problems endured by early believers. Hebrews 10:32-36 (NIV) Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. [33] Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. [34] You sympathized with those in

[35] So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. [36] You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

Remember Past Victories What problems does the author point out that the readers had overcome? How did they respond to these problems? What does the writer give for reasons for these kinds of responses? How does remembering previous spiritual victories help us in the present?

Application Read Hebrews completely this week. – Take notes on how Jesus is magnified above everything – Note especially His sacrifice that opened access to the Father – Draw near to God in worship of who He is and what He has done for you through Jesus

Application Write down the names of a few of your closest Christian friends – Ask God to show you ways you can intentionally encourage them in their faith – Take action this week to encourage them

Application Write down a brief spiritual autobiography – Recount past victories and God’s faithfulness to you – Remember He is the same God today – Let the evidence of past victories motivate you to endure faithfully to the end
