Compressor Plant Utilities and Maintenance

Presenter Hazrul Adzfar Shabri Siti Norlaila Faeizah Mohd Rudin Irdani Idris

Content Introduction Compressor Function Type of compressor Maintenance Conclusion Safety

Introduction

Almost similar to pump – Main action pump=pressurize fluid to transport – Main action compressor=pressurize fluid by reducing the volume

Function Provide high pressure gas to plant – low pressure steam to high pressure steam (steam reforming) Reduce volume of gas – For transport (LNG) – Processing (Compress gas, increase pressure, increase concentration) Maintain pressure of gas Pressurize water in boiler (Carnot cycle)

Function Cooling/heating system that use refrigerant – Compress gas refrigerant, condensing the gas releasing the heat

Type of compressor Positive displacement – Compress gas by reducing the volume Dynamic – Change the velocity of gas to pressure

Positive displacement Reciprocating Rotary

Dynamic Centrifugal Axial

Maintenance Preventive maintenance checks Important Save time and money – Avoid possible breakdown – Maintains efficiency, saving money, maintaining ouput

Lubrication – Pump oil – Regular checking (Daily) – Oil level Leak – Oil – Air Drain water (water vapour in air may condensate when air is compressed) Belt (timing, power)

Air Filter – Check air filter for dust or breaking (weekly) Clean or replace – Check to ensure accurate air flow rate – Safety relief valve – Leak

Check (daily weekly) – Noise – Vibration – Connection for leaks – Bolts and screw are tightened Service pump Oil (Annually)

Cooling system – Compressed gas get hotter – Cooling system for example water cooling system Gauge – Check and calibrate pressure gauge – Ensure accurate reading – Not overwork/overpressure the compressor

Safety Before maintenance operation – Ensure all electrical connection disconnected – Ensure compressor is relieved from any pressure – Ensure temperature cooled down

Conclusion Compressor increase the pressure of gas by decreasing the volume Two type of compressor design; dynamic and positive displacement Maintenance important; save money and time for future Check: lubrication, air inlet, cooling system, gauge, connection, noise, vibration, screw Safety-disconnect electricity, relieve pressure, cool down temperature
