MDOP 2010: Diagnostic and Recovery Toolset (DaRT) Speaker Fabrizio Grossi

MDOP 2010 Translating software inventory into business intelligence Enhancing group policy through change management Proactively managing application and operating system failures Powerful tools to accelerate desktop repair Dynamically streaming software as a centrally managed service Simplifying deployment and management of Virtual PCs

Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset (MSDaRT) Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset (MSDaRT) helps diagnose and repair a system (trouble starting or other issues) Start the system using the Emergency Repair Disk (or Boot CD for MSDaRT), ERD Commander - graphical environment and a command-line console You can access any file system, which includes FAT, FAT32, and NTFS.

ERD Commander Overview ERD Commander provides a visual interface to access troubleshooting tools from a recovery boot disk In DaRT 5.0, the interface looks like a typical start menu In DaRT 6.0, the interface is part of the Windows recovery environment

Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset (MSDaRT): Versions MSDaRT 6.5 Windows 7 (x86 and x64 architectures) Windows Server 2008 R2 (x86 and x64 architectures) 1GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor 1GB of system memory MSDaRT 6.0 Windows Vista (x86 and x64 architectures) Windows Server 2008 (x86 and x64 architectures) 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor 512 MB of system memory MSDaRT 5.0 Windows(R) 2000 (x86) Windows XP (x86) Windows Server 2003 (x86)

How to Create a Boot CD for ERD Commander To create a bootable ISO image, use the ERD Commander Boot Media Wizard: Create a bootable ISO image that can be burned to a CD Make sure to include network and storage drivers

Differences Between DaRT 5.0 and DaRT 6.0 New Features In DaRT 6.0 How Windows Recovery Environment Integrates with DaRT 6.0 Removed Features from DaRT 6.0

New Features in DaRT 6.0 Feature DescriptionBenefit Anti-malware (Standalone System Sweeper) Spyware, virus, and malware removal software for both Windows XP and Windows Vista Removes viruses and spyware while system is offline New operating system support Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 support 64-bit support for Vista localized in eight languages DaRT in new Microsoft client and Server environments Supports 64-bit operating systems BitLocker unlock Unlocks BitLocker volume, and enables end user to run DaRT tools on the drive Can use DaRT tools on encrypted drives Read from USB drives Can pull files from a USB drive Easy file transfers from one machine to another

How Windows Recovery Environment Integrates with DaRT 6.0 FeatureDescriptionBenefit Windows complete computer restore Native Windows restore tool Leverage new backup systems Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool Built-in memory testing tool Administrators isolate bad RAM as a possible cause to system instability BitLocker unlock Unlocks BitLocker volume (requires key) Allows administrators to access encrypted volumes System boot file repair Native Windows RE boot file repair tool First line system repair tool can quickly repair most boot file-related problems

Removed Features from DaRT 6.0 FeatureDescriptionBenefit File sharing Shares the local ERD commander instance Security issues File restore on live system Same as file restore in DaRT, except using on the live host system instead of offline system Consolidate tools to the ERD environment Overall ERD help Help for DaRT overall is removed, and replaced with help for each individual tool Start menu and taskbar Start menu and taskbar are not part of DaRT 6.0 DaRT 6.0 runs on Windows RE, and shares the same UI Easier access to the help you are looking for
