Presentation transcript:

Word of the Day Denature - changes in the chemical structure of an enzyme

Catalase Various Experiments

Enzymes are Proteins Catalysts (speed up chemical reactions)

Enzymes can either Breakdown substrates into products »or Assemble substrates into products

The enzyme catalase is found in cells H2O2 + catalase H20 + O2+ heat+catalase Produced in the body and too much is harmful Water + oxygen

Enzymes Can be denatured by changes in environmental conditions Denaturing makes the enzyme not work

Where is Catalase Found? 1. Carefully place a small quantity of each material in a well. 2. Add 5-10 drops of H 2 O 2 to each well and record observations. 0 - no bubbling 1- small bubble formation 2- fast bubble formation 3- very fast bubble formation

Part II: What Effect Does Heat Have on Enzyme Function?

Part III: Does acid destroy an enzyme’s ability to speed up a chemical reaction? GroupReaction rate Control (water) Experimental (lemon juice)

Part IV: Can an enzyme be used up or reused? 1. Carefully place a small amount of liver in a test tube 2. Add 5ml of hydrogen peroxide 3. Record reaction rate (0-5) 4. Pour off liquid and leave the liver 5. Add 5 ml of hydrogen peroxide 6. Record reaction
