EPA & DHA are an essential part of every cell membrane, and are required to maintain the proper shape, flexibility, fluidity and “slipperiness” of cell membranes. (flexibility and slipperiness of membranes is important for un-impeded blood flow through vessels thereby decreasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes). ©2009 David F. Lemire, D.C.

EPA & DHA play a major role in decreasing inflammation in the body via substances called prostaglandins. EPA & DHA produce anti- inflammatory prostaglandins and Omega 6 fatty acids increase inflammation in the body by producing pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. ©2009 David F. Lemire, D.C.

Omega-3’s play a role in virtually every human function including growth and development, digestion, brain and nerve function, immune function, hormone production and regulation, maintenance of skin and bones, regulation of healing and inflammation, heart function, vision, cholesterol levels and even emotions and behaviors. ©2009 David F. Lemire, D.C.

The health-promoting effects of EPA and DHA are reducing inflammation, reducing the clotting tendency of the blood, improving the profile of fats circulating in the blood, optimizing brain function (DHA is a major constituent of cell membranes in the central nervous system) and inhibiting abnormal cell proliferation, thereby reducing cancer risks. All of this translates into significant disease protection. Weil, MD (Time ) ©2009 David F. Lemire, D.C.

Research continues to confirm that the omega-3 fatty acids found in oily, dark-fleshed fish offer genuine health benefits. Eating fish regularly can help ward off the serious heart rhythm disturbances associated with sudden cardiac death. It also appears to reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes, mental decline in old age, and prostate cancer. Harvard Men’s Health Watch ©2009 David F. Lemire, D.C.

Extensive research indicates that omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and help prevent risk factors associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. These essential fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain and appear to be particularly important for cognitive (brain memory and performance) and behavioral function. In fact, infants who do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids from their mothers during pregnancy are at risk for developing vision and nerve problems. Symptoms of omega-3 fatty acid deficiency include extreme tiredness (fatigue), poor memory, dry skin, heart problems, mood swings or depression, and poor circulation.
