JDF: The Perfect Matchmaker for Offset and Digital Printing Larry Zusman Xerox Corporation Worldwide Manager Workflow Marketing

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES   Workflow hits at the heart of the issues our customers and are dealing with:  "Disconnected work processes, labor-intensive steps, integrating new digital printing technologies into existing environments, demands for faster, shorter runs with higher customer satisfaction.  Customers are asking where to invest?  What's the return?  What to change"  And how to take full advantage of the new business opportunities with the digital printing. In our market, workflow is often defined as the process to manage a print job from creation through to final invoice.  When integrated and connected it offers improvements in how jobs are input, printed and fulfilled. At Xerox, we believe workflow delivers that -- and much more. It plays a critical role in streamlining operations, reducing costs and enabling new high value applications, like Personalized Communications or Book Printing.  When the process is end-to-end, and streamlined to enable interoperability among systems, applications and presses, it has a significant, measurable impact on a Print Providers ability to compete, profit and grow. FREEFLOW PERFORMANCE ACCELERATED We believe workflow is directly tied to performance.  With FreeFlow, Print Services Providers of all kinds are seeing improvements in operational performance and acceleration in business performance.

The State of the Printing Industry Why JDF? The State of the Printing Industry Lots of staff intervention in all processes Automation exists in islands (departments) Limited Communication between devices Market conditions asking for shorter runs and faster turnarounds. Here is the “State of the Industry” Printers went “Digital” after Drupa 1995 with the advent of CTP systems and some went “Digital” when they purchased a DI Press after Drupa 2000. But their businesses: Still has lots of staff intervention all through process Automation exists in islands which might be the result of home-grown systems in each department Limited Communications between devices if the Printer uses equipment from same supplier -- none if not. The market is asking for shorter runs and turnarounds. If they use their CTP or DI equipment they lose money. POST-PRESS & DELIVERY CREATE ESTIMATE PRE-PRESS PRESS ACCOUNTING

Number of jobs increases as run lengths decline “To maximize profitability, print service providers must embrace technologies that enable greater workflow efficiency and productivity to handle this increase in smaller jobs.” — Infotrends/CAPV # OF JOBS INCREASE AS RUN LENGTHS DECLINE   Recently, Infotrends/CAPV produced research that put some numbers behind the shift.  It shows clearly the shift away from long run and the shift toward short runs.  The implication is interesting -- the move toward the short run is increasing overall # of jobs that Print Services Providers are dealing with.  Infotrends/CAPV concludes that "to maximize profitability, print service providers must embrace technologies that enable greater workflow efficiency and productivity to handle this increase in smaller jobs" Let's look a little closer at the areas in workflow that are going to require improvement as the number of jobs increase. THE WORKFLOW THAT DRIVES THE NEW BUSINESS OF PRINTING Many of the bottlenecks in printing operations occur at the point the job comes into the shop.  Adobe and others are quick to point out that about 50% of PDF files come into a shop with errors.  Missing fonts, low res images, and formatting issues lead the list of common problems.  In the days of long runs a CSR or sales reps would be in place to interface with the customer.  But in Digital Printing, an organization can be dealing with 10x the number of jobs and can't afford the same "high touch" workflow.  Other processes in workflow like imposition, color management, pre-flight are also prime targets for automation.    The ever-increasing production power of digital printing continues to cause customer expectations for quicker turnarounds and short runs to rise. In order to meet print-on-demand requirements, print providers in all areas must take steps to streamline their workflow, add efficiencies, and increase their overall productivity. That’s where Xerox and Xerox FreeFlow workflow solutions come in… = more jobs = less time per job = need for more productivity Increase in short runs

JDF significance to Xerox Members of CIP4 and NGP Drives Freeflow component strategy Customers want to know about it Adobe, Creo and EFI are members Xerox buys into the JDF standard. Because JDF is our link to offset. The Xerox focus is to understand what all the workflow pieces are, but most importantly to really get involved with digital workflows. One of the aims of FreeFlow is to use the existing partnerships with Adobe, Creo and EFI to compete against HP Indigo, Heidelberg, Oce and IBM. Xerox are fortunate to have two major suppliers in the industry that can not just offer them RIP’s but many other tools. It is important that you learn more about what Creo and EFI have to offer this week and during the year. A very popular industry-wide initiative for automating the entire print production process is called Network Graphic Production and is headed by Creo. Let’s take a look at NGP and what Creo has to offer.
