Can the continued growth and development of Dubai be sustained? Lucy Satterthwaite 9C/KM

Where is Dubai? Dubai is here! N Dubai is here! E W S This is a map of Dubai, there are several main attractions highlighted, such as “The world”, Palm Jumeirah and the Sports City.

More about dubai 25° 16' north = latitude 55° 16' east = longitude Dubai is the second largest member of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dubai is the fastest growing city in the world. Dubai has one of the highest per capita incomes In Dubai, there are no taxes on income and there are no personal taxes either. In Dubai Emirates Mall, you can ski indoors while shopping, measuring 400 meters and using 6000 tons of snow. Burj Dubai will become the world's tallest building, along with the world's tallest man-made structure, when it is completed. Eighty percent of the residents of Dubai are foreigners. Dubai is the Middle East supply port for the jewellery market.

Dubai's Crude Oil findings Fifty years ago it was just a small trading port and pearl fishing town - one of several little city states on the Persian Gulf, along with Abu Dhabi and the five other sheikhdoms that went on to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It was transformed by the discovery of oil in 1966. In the ensuing decades, it attracted a stream of foreign workers and investment, but by the mid-1990s people realised that, unlike Abu Dhabi, it would run out of oil within 30 years…. This is a graph showing the prices of Crude oil in Dubai, from February 2007 to February 2011. As you can see, the price increased up to 2008 but then dramatically decreased shortly after.

There are other reasons why Dubai became so successful such as: Tax free -Investments -Importing and Exporting goods -Lots of rich people go there to live. -Cheap employment of foreigners. But Dubai soon realised that they would never have a never-ending supply of Crude Oil. It is estimated that the oil will run out by 2025. They also realised that, just like LA, they had a water shortage. A Crude oil factory in Dubai Some skyscrapers ect in Dubai

There are also problems concerning Dubai’s Religious faiths There are also problems concerning Dubai’s Religious faiths. Dubai is a Muslim state. Displays of affection among couples Whether married or not — in public places does not fit the local customs and culture. Holding hands for a married couple is tolerated but kissing and petting are considered an offence to public decency. Public displays of affection, as well as sexual harassment or randomly addressing women in public places, are liable to be punished by imprisonment or deportation. In 2009 a local woman was offended by a British couple kissing in a restaurant at the Jumeirah Beach Residence. The couple were arrested and received a one month prison sentence. They were subsequently deported. Clothing In public places dress modestly. In public places such as shopping malls and restaurants, women should not wear low-cut tops or short skirts. Swimwear should only be worn at the beach. Alcohol Non-Muslims are allowed to drink alcohol at licensed premises (hotel bars and restaurants) and at home (with an alcohol license). Being drunk outside these areas in an offence and can result in a fine or prison sentence. Loud Music and Dancing Dancing and loud music is not allowed in public places such as beaches and parks. Driving Dubai has a zero-tolerance policy with respect to driving under the influence of alcohol. Incidents of road rage can lead to fines and imprisonment. Photography Do not take photos of people in public places, especially women and children, without obtaining their permission. Do not take pictures of mosques or military installations.

Overcoming Dubai's problems Water shortage – filter any water from the sea, re-use and filter the water from hotels, houses ect. So that it can be re-used again and again. - Collect rain water and filter it so it can be used and drank safely. Vehicles – run them on battery to save petrol and decrease noise. Energy (electricity) – introduce solar panels in the houses and facilities (hotels ect) so that the electricity can be saved. This is also a good idea as there is lots of sun in Dubai. Reduce waste – re-use, reduce and recycle! Encourage the community to recycle and re-use more, resulting in less waste.

Evaluation / Conclusion Overall, I think that Dubai will not be able to sustain their growth and development. Soon, their supply of Crude oil will run out and they will be stuck for exporting (even though they have other goods, crude oil was the main one). I have learnt a lot from this subject such as the Muslim laws of Dubai and how it went from rags to riches. I found this topic very interesting!
