Chemical Energy YEAR 8 PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Student Objectives - By the end of this lesson you will be able to define chemical energy. By the end of this lesson you will be able to describe different sources of stored chemical energy.

REVIEW WRITE IN SCIENCE BOOKS State the four forms of potential energy. Describe the difference between fission and fusion. Be prepared to share your ideas

Chemical Energy Chemical energy is energy that is released by a chemical reaction. Chemical Energy is required to bond atoms together. When bonds are broken, energy is released.

Examples  Fuel and batteries are forms of stored chemical energy.  The most important form of stored chemical energy is food!

Food is the body’s source of energy. We need energy to grow, be active and maintain health. Different types of food provide different amounts of energy. Energy is measured in kilojoules – kJ. FOOD

Chemical Energy Different people need different amounts of energy. The amount of energy they need depends on their age, job, how active they are and their health.

Key Questions Working in pairs you have 2 minutes to discuss the following questions. What is chemical energy? Name 4 sources that have stored chemical energy. Be prepared to share your ideas
