Honesty in a relationship is absolutely essential! If a person is a liar, maybe the words, I love you are just another lie even if this person doesnt want to hurt his partners feelings. But in this case these words may hurt the feelings of the other person more than something else.

Billy Joel Honesty is such a lonely word. Everyone is so untrue. Honesty is hardly ever heard. And mostly what I need from you.

Other persons prefer to live in the hope that honesty is not important but they continue to suffer and to lie themselves. One of the most important Latin poets, Catullus, in his poems shows his love for Lesbia even if she betrays him.

CARME XCII, CATULLUS Lesbia mi dicit semper male nec tacet umquam de me: Lesbia me dispeream nisi amat. Quo signo? Quia sunt totidem mea: deprecor illam assidue, verum dispeream nisi amo. Lebia sparla sempre di me, senza respiro di me: morissi se Lesbia non mi ama. Lo so sono come lei: la copro ogni giorno di insulti, ma morissi se io non lamo.
