Work and Energy. What is WORK? Work is equal to the amount of force it takes for an object to move a distance. Formula: Work = Force X Distance W = F.

Energy

All objects have some energy. Energy is required to do work – move/lift/push/pull.

Law of Conservation of Energy: Energy cannot be lost or created, but can only be transformed or converted into different forms of energy. Initial Total Energy = Final Total Energy

Energy can be converted to several different types; Kinetic energy (Energy of motion) Faster an object moves – more kinetic energy it has. Potential energy (Stored energy) Higher or more stretched an object the more energy is stored in the object for use.

Heat energy (Energy of particles) Energy given off by all particles – more heat means more energy that escapes. Sound energy (Energy of air) Moving air molecules closer together and farther apart – heard as sound – transmits energy. Chemical energy (Reaction energy) Molecules and compounds store and release energy during reactions. There are still more kinds…

Before Car Crash Car 1 possesses kinetic energy Car 2 possesses kinetic energy (exact amounts depend on their speeds and masses)

After Car Crash Both cars in accident ‘lost’ their kinetic energy Converted into other forms of energy: – lost as heat energy / sound energy – energy lost to crushing the metal (mechanical). The total energy before and after the crash is still the same, just in different forms.
