HOW TO ADMINISTER EPINEPHRINE

What is Epinephrine? (Epi)  Adrenaline  Emergency medication  Naturally occurring  Dilator

Why would I use Epi?  Allergic Reaction (Anaphylaxis)  Signs and Symptoms Swelling (Face and Neck) Hives/Rash Difficulty breathing/Wheezing Itching Difficulty swallowing Shock Asthma

Who can give Epi?  Student (Self-administration)  Trained personnel  School nurse

How to give Epi?   Step 1: Call 911  Step 2: Remove from tube  Step 3: Check solution clarity and expiration date  Step 4: Remove cap (blue)  Step 5: Orange tip to outer thigh  Step 6: Press down for 10 sec  Step 7: Save pen for emergency personnel (there will be solution left over)

What is a typical response to Epi?  Increased heart rate  Heart Palpitations  Nausea and Vomiting  Sweating  Anxiety  Pale  Dizziness  Jittery

Where do I get the Epi?  Individual basis determined by the student’s physician  On the student  Stored with other school medications  You will be notified by administration as to any individual persons or needs for epinephrine

Notes  Epi/Epi Junior  Do not use someone else’s pen  Lasts about 20 minutes

Time to Practice  Call 911  Cannister  Blue cap  Orange to thigh  Hold for 10 sec  Save used Epi pen
