Presentation transcript:

You will write your own Ode – either serious, funny or ironic. In it you will include: 1 diction pattern, 3 sound device repetitions, and 4 examples of figurative language (your choice of which device(s) you want to use). On tournament day, you will bring in 4 copies of your poem to share with your group. One of the copies should be annotated with each of the devices you incorporated into your poem marked. That is the copy you will turn in to me for scoring. I will score you only on the completeness of the task and the accuracy of your annotations.

May the best ode win…

The following slide will give you instructions on what to do with each of the three (in some cases four) poems that you will be reading. Follow these steps for EACH of the three poems you are given. It should take minutes. Remember: You don’t have to annotate your own. This should already be done! Distribute your ode copies so that each member has one copy of each ode. Keep your own annotated copy! Following your reading / note taking, you will debate and choose the best work from your group of 4-5. Put a star on the top of the winning ode!

1. To the side of each stanza paraphrase what the writer is saying 2. Close Read Mark/Underline figurative language (apostrophe, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, etc.) and label what they are. Mark/Squiggle line imagery. Mark/Circle words that contribute to the tone of the poem Mark/Draw Squares around phrases you aren’t sure of Draw triangles around a diction pattern in the poem. Draw three pictures of images from the poem. 3. Answer These Questions (complete sentences) What is the mood / tone of the piece? Does the poet maintain a consistent focus on their topic throughout? Does the poet demonstrate creativity (not cliché or understated / unclear imagery, limited figurative language, minimal diction and syntax complexity)? Does the poem achieve a level of excellence and literary merit?

We will have the poets read the 7-8 winning odes aloud for the class Every student will then vote for their top two odes Votes will be counted to determine a winner and a runner up. Fabulous rewards await the winners… or candy or some other prize at least.
