Healthy Eating

Daily Objective Healthy Eating To analyze your eating habits and compare them to the daily recommendations given by Health Canada So that you can make informed and healthy choices for your daily diet. You’ve demonstrated you have understood when:  I have listed in 1 days worth of meals in my food diary.  I have provided healthy changes that can be made to my daily diet.  I have provided an example of a healthy meal plan for 1 day.

Fruits & Vegetables Any Fruit/ vegetable or 100% vegetable juice counts as a member of the Fruit and Vegetable Group. Fruits and vegetables may be raw or cooked; fresh, frozen, canned, or dried/dehydrated; and may be whole, cut-up, or mashed.

Fruits & Vegetables – Health Benefits People who eat more vegetables and fruits as part of an overall healthy diet are likely to have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases. Vegetables and fruits provide nutrients vital for health and maintenance of your body.

Grain Products Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product. Bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tortillas, and grits are examples of grain products. Examples include:  whole-wheat flour  bulgur (cracked wheat)  oatmeal  whole cornmeal  brown rice

Grains – Health Benefits Consuming whole grains as part of a healthy diet may reduce the risk of heart disease. Consuming foods containing fiber, such as whole grains, as part of a healthy diet, may reduce constipation. Eating whole grains may help with weight management. Eating grain products fortified with folate before and during pregnancy helps prevent neural tube defects during fetal development.

Meats and Alternatives All foods made from meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products, nuts, and seeds are considered part of the Protein Foods Group. Beans and peas are also part of the Vegetable Group.

Meats – Health Benefit Foods in the meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, and seed group provide nutrients that are vital for health and maintenance of your body. However, choosing foods from this group that are high in saturated fat and cholesterol may have health implications.

Milk and Alternatives All fluid milk products and many foods made from milk are considered part of this food group. Most Dairy Group choices should be fat-free or low-fat. Foods made from milk that retain their calcium content are part of the group. Foods made from milk that have little to no calcium, such as cream cheese, cream, and butter, are not. Calcium-fortified soymilk (soy beverage) is also part of the Dairy Group.

Milk – Health Benefits Consuming dairy products provides health benefits – especially improved bone health. Foods in the Dairy Group provide nutrients that are vital for health and maintenance of your body. These nutrients include calcium, potassium, vitamin D, and protein.

Recommended Serving Size

Check for Understanding How many servings of each food group should you consume daily? What does a serving size consist of?

Meal Plan Activity In Groups Everyone must hand one in. Due next Class Thursday September 18th
