North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards  Standard I Teachers Demonstrate Leadership Teachers demonstrate high ethical standards including honesty, integrity, fair treatment, and respect for others. Teachers uphold the Code of Ethics and the Standards of Professional Conduct.

Standards of Professional Conduct Violations of these standards shall subject an educator to investigation and disciplinary action by the SBE or LEA

Generally recognized standards:  The educator shall practice standards of federal, state, and local governing bodies.

Personal Conduct  Positive Role Model  Demonstrate high standard of personal character and conduct

Honesty  Teacher shall NOT engage in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation in performance of professional duties

Conduct With Students  Treat all students with respect  Not commit any abusive act or sexual exploitation with, to, or in the presence of a student including:

Conduct with Students (cont.)  Use of language that is profane, vulgar, or demeaning  Any sexual act  Any solicitation of a sexual act (written, verbal, or physical)  Any act of child abuse  Any act of sexual harassment  Any intentional solicitation, encouragement, or consummation of a romantic or physical relationship with a student (the term romantic relationship shall include dating any student)

Confidential Information  Keep in confidence personally identifiable information regarding students or their family members

Rights of Others  Will not willfully or maliciously violate constitutional or civil rights of a student or parent / guardian, or colleague

Confidential Information  Keep in confidence personally identifiable information regarding students or their family members that has been obtained in the course of professional service, unless disclosure is required or permitted by law or is necessary for the personal safety of the student or others.

Required Reports  Make all reports required by Chapter 115-C in North Carolina General Statutes.

Alcohol or controlled substance abuse  Not be under the influence of, possess, use, or consume on school premises or at a school sponsored activity a controlled substance (without a prescription authorizing such use.  Not be under the influence of, use, or consume an alcoholic beverage or controlled substance on school premises or at a school sponsored activity involving students  Not furnish alcohol or controlled substance to any student (*medications dispensed at school)

Others  Compliance with criminal laws  Public Funds and property  Shall not perform any act as an employee during the time the license has been revoked or suspended.  Conduct related to ethical violations
