Sensory Imagery

Introduction Poetry expresses through words what is happening in the heart and soul. When a poet writes, he uses figurative language. He may use sensory imagery to make you remember things you saw, smelled, tasted, touched, and heard.

The Sensory Poem This is a poem where you use your imagination to connect abstract concepts with concrete objects. It uses the five senses to accomplish this. You create sensory images that evoke images, smells, feelings, sounds and more in your reader. Let’s see a diagram.

Now prepare your own poem. Write one Sensory Poem about any topic that interests you. The theme can be abstract (love, friendship), or concrete (my child, the car, food), and the tone can be funny, serious, or mixed. Use a dictionary for help.
