The United States Constitution

Structure  4 Parts:  Preamble  7 Articles  Bill of Rights  Amendments

Preamble:  Explains the purpose of the document.  You’re going to get a handout on this on Monday.

Article I: Legislature  Legislative Branch of Government  Makes all of the laws.  Bicameral Legislature:  Senate (Upper House)  House of Representatives  Describes how the members of each house will be elected and what rules they must follow when they are making laws

Article II: Executive Branch  Responsible for making sure laws are enforced  Headed by the Presidents and Vice-President  Includes the president’s cabinet (advisors)  Explains how to elect these positions, how to remove them from office, and what credentials someone must have to run for office.  THE PRESIDENT DOES NOT MAKE ANY LAWS!!!

Article III: The Judicial Branch  Responsible for interpreting laws  Creates the Supreme Court and the structure of lower courts  Describes the kinds of cases the Supreme Court can hear

The Other Articles:  Article IV: Describes the relationship between the national and state governments  Article V: Describes when and how the Constitution can be changed  Article VI: Declares the Constitution supreme law of the land  Article VII: Describes how the Constitution may be ratified

Bill of Rights  The first 10 Amendments added to the Constitution  Based off of the English Bill of Rights  Describes all of the basic freedoms all American citizens have

Amendments  These include the Bill of Rights  27 total  More about these later!!!

Assignment for today  Add the following two words to your vocabulary list from yesterday :  Supremacy Clause  Enumerated Powers  Open textbook to page 143.  Answer questions #1-10 on page  Use Chapter 5 (pages ) to answer the questions  Write down the question, the correct answer, and the page/paragraph you found the correct answer on.  IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE PAGE NUMBER, I WILL NOT GIVE YOU CREDIT. : )
