The Louvre or the Louvre Museum (French: Musée du Louvre) is one of the world's largest museums and a historic monument. A central landmark of Paris, France, it is located on the Right Bank of the Seine in the 1st arrondissement (district). Nearly 35,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st century are exhibited over an area of 652,300 square feet. The Louvre is the world's most visited museum, and received more than 9.7 million visitors in 2012.

Collections The Musée du Louvre contains more than 380,000 objects and displays 35,000 works of art in eight curatorial departments Inside the Louvre Museum

Permanent Collections Egyptian antiquities Near Eastern antiquities Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Islamic art Sculpture Decorative arts Paintings Prints and drawings Mona Lisa By Leonardo da Vinci

History The Louvre Palace, which houses the museum, was begun as a fortress by Philip II in the 12th century, with remnants of this building still visible in the crypt. The Louvre Palace was altered frequently throughout the Middle Ages. In the 14th century, Charles V converted the building into a residence and in 1546. During the French Revolution the Louvre was transformed into a public museum. The museum opened on 10 August 1793, the first anniversary of the monarchy's demise. The only portion of the medieval Louvre still visible

This portrait was commissioned as a gift for Philip V of Spain This portrait was commissioned as a gift for Philip V of Spain. However, it was such a success at court that it was never sent to Spain. Every detail of the work is aimed at producing the quintessential image of absolute power: the nobility of the antique setting, the crimson curtain, and the solemnity of the Sun King wearing his coronation robes embroidered with the royal fleur de lys.

Fun Facts The Louvre was in the movie “Edge of Tomorrow” Napoleon Bonaparte temporarily renamed the museum after himself The Louvre became a clearinghouse for artwork stolen by the Nazis during World War II The Louvre was not originally built to house a museum; in fact, the structure was built some 600 years prior to its conversion into the museum it is today it is the third biggest museum in the world after the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York and the Hermitage in St Petersburg

Reflection I enjoyed making this presentation, while learning more about the Louvre museum, or Musée du Louvre. I did not even know that the painting of Mona Lisa is held in this museum. I also did not know that this appeared in the movie “Edge of Tomorrow” until I saw the unique, easy to memorize shape of the pyramid building over the entrance. I was also surprised with some of the fun facts, such as that Napoleon once named it temporarily after himself. And how at first it was not built as museum, but as a fortress, by Philip II in the 12th century, with remnants of this building still visible in the crypt.
