Do Now Translate the following phrases. 1. our calculator 2. his desk 3. her pencil 4. their computer 5. my book 6. your notebook 7. his backpack 8. my printer 9. our paper 10. your pen

Expressing possession In English, we use ‘s to indicate that something belongs to someone. the book of Mariela  Mariela’s book In Spanish, ‘s does not make sense. It does not exist. So we use the first, longer form. the book of Mariela

The object comes first the book of Mariela el libro de Mariela

Translate the phrases to Spanish. 1. The family of Miguel 2. The twin of Inés 3. the great-grandmother of Julia 4. the dress of Esmerelda 5. the hat of Jose 6. The computer of the teacher

Moving from English to Spanish We won’t see phrases written in the order we just saw. Usually in English, we use the ‘s form. So we need to be able to rearrange the phrase before translating it. Miguel’s friend  the friend of Miguel  el amigo de Miguel

Rearrange the phrases, then translate them to Spanish. 1. The girl’s father 2. Juana’s sister 3. Miguel’s stepfather 4. Rosario’s mother-in-law 5. Sara’s friendship 6. Rico’s baby

Possessive Pronouns In English: my, your, his/her, our, their Examples?

my = mi my house = mi casa *Note: We don’t say “mi la casa.” It’s the same as saying “my the house.” You only need ONE article. You can have a definite article (el, la, los, las), an indefinite article (un, una, unos, unas), or a possessive article. You cannot have more than one.

my = mi or mis my house = mi casa my houses = mis casas your = tu or tus your friend = tu amigo your friends = tus amigos

his, her, their, your (plural) = su or sus his shirt = su camisa her shirts = sus camisas their hat = su sombrero their hats = sus sombreros *Note: mi, tu, and su do not change when the object is feminine. Why? *Note: Add an S when they have more than one thing.

For OUR, the rules are a little bit different. You DO change the end of the word when the object is feminine. our = nuestro, nuestra, nuestros, nuestras our book = nuestro libro our house = nuestra casa our books = our houses = nuestros libros nuestras casas

Change the words in parentheses to Spanish. 1. Ella tiene (her) chaqueta. 2. (My) hermano es cómico. 3. Nosotros tenemos (our) libros. 4. ¿Él es (your) amigo? 5. (Their) familia es intersante. 6. (His) mamá es inteligente. 7. (My) amigas son bonitas. 8. ¿Ustedes tienen (your) comida?

Possessive Nouns

Translate these sentences to English. 1. El sombrero es mío. 2. Las galletas son tuyas. 3. La mochila es suya. 4. Los libros son nuestros. The hat is mine. Write the word for mine. How would I make it feminine? Plural? The cookies are yours. Write the word for yours. How would I make it masculine? Singular? The backpack is hers/his/theirs. Write the word. How would I make it masculine? Plural? The books are ours. Write the word for ours. How would I make it feminine? Singular?

Difference between nouns and adjectives - It is my book. vs It is mine. What’s the difference? If you don’t want to name the object (or repeat it, depending on the sentence), use the words you just copied. Ej: El carro es mi carro. VS El carro es mío.

Un diálogo You and your friends are sorting through the groceries you just bought. Copy down the list of foods you bought, then listen to the script. Write down who bought each item. Example: you hear person 2 say “Los tomates son míos.” you write: los tomates – 2 Pizza Hamburguesas Azúcar fresas

Un diálogo A group of friends is sorting through the groceries they just bought. Listen to their conversation, and try to transcribe (write down) as much as you can.

Mini Quiz 1. Los zapatos son ________. a. yo’s b. mis c. mios d. míos 2. La mochila es _________. a. suya b. suyo c. su d. ellas 3. Replace the word in parentheses with the correct Spanish word: Nosotros usamos su libro porque no tenemos (ours). 4. Translate to English: ¿Los pasaportes son tuyos? 5.
