Unité 11 Le passé composé avec ÊTRE

Le passé composé The passé composé is a PAST TENSE used to tell what has happened in the past. As its name implies, this tense is a COMPOUND VERB TENSE, which requires TWO VERBS---a helping verb and a past participle. YOU MUST HAVE BOTH VERBS!!!!

Le verbe auxiliaire There are 2 different helping verbs used to form the passé composé. They are: AVOIR & ÊTRE. Avoir is the most commonly used helping verb. We will begin learning about the verbs which use ÊTRE as the auxiliary verb. The list for these will be short (for now) with 8-9 verbs. We will be adding to this list.

Preliminary List of verbs which use ÊTRE as the auxiliary verb in the passé composé ALLER --to go RESTER --to stay/remain VENIR (ALL FORMS/ALL PREFIXES SUCH AS DEVENIR, REVENIR)—to come ENTRER --to enter RENTRER --to re-enter/ return SORTIR --to leave/ go out PARTIR --to depart/leave ARRIVER --to arrive

Part 1 After you have your subject, you will need the HELPING VERB---for now, this will be a present tense conjugation of the verb ÊTRE: JE -----SUISNOUS---SOMMES TU----ESVOUS ----ÊTES IL/ELLE -----ESTILS/ELLES----SONT

Part 2 Now you need the PAST PARTICIPLE of the verb you are using. *Verbs which end in “ER” will drop the “ER” and add on É. *Verbs which end in “IR” (except venir) will drop the “IR” and add on an I *Verbs which end in “RE” will drop the “RE” and add on a U Examples on next slide

Sample Past Participles Aller Allé (e)(s)(es) ResterResté (e)(s) (es) Sortir Sorti (e) (s)(es) PartirParti (e) (s) (es) ArriverArrivé (e) (s) (es) Venir*Venu (e) (s) (es) *IRREG Revenir*Revenu (e) (s) (es) *IRREG

Put them together Subject: Je Form of ÊTRE as Auxiliary Verb: suis Action Verb (aller) in the Past Participle:allé Past tense sentence: Je suis allé(e) au cinéma. (I went to the movies.)

TO NOTE When using ETRE as the helping (auxiliary) verb in the passé composé, THERE MUST BE AGREEMENT (masculine/feminine/singular/plural) of the PAST PARTICIPLE and the SUBJECT. SO….feminine subjects will add on an extra E to the past participle. Sorry…it MUST happen.

Pratique Je---sortir= Nous---arriver= Tu---entrer= Sophie---rentrer= Les filles---aller= Mes oncles---partir= Notre soeur---rester=

Le negatif When making a sentence negative in the passé composé, the NE…PAS (or the ne…jamais, ne…plus, ne…rien & other negatives) will be placed AROUND THE AUXILIARY VERB ONLY Example: Je ne suis pas allé(e) au Mexique. Vous n’êtes pas arrivés en retard. Les garçons ne sont pas venus à 8heures.
