2. The Use of Etre
Etre is used as a helping verb in the past for specific verbs
These verbs CAN NOT use avoir as a helping verb… they must use être (conjugated in the present)
Subject + helping verb (être) + past participle*
The main formation stays the same only you are now using être instead of avoir as the helping verb

3. Verbs that go with Etre
The following verbs go with être in the passe compose
Aller partir
Arriver passer
Descendre rester
Entrer retourner
Rentrer sortir
Monter tomber
Mourir * venir*
Naitre* devenir* (revenir)

4. IRREGULAR PAST PARTICIPLES
The following five verbs have irregular past participles
Mourir = mort
Naitre = né
Venir = venu
Devenir = devenu
All the other verbs that go with etre follow the rules for past participles

5. Using être in passe compose
When using verbs that go with être in the passe compose
Etre conjugated : je suis
Past participle: Je suis parti (I left)
The unique component with être is that the past participles must agree with the subject
Elle est partie (she left)
Elles sont parties (they left)
Nous sommes partis (we (guys) left)

6. CLASS WORK: P.C With Etre
Write the following sentences in passe compose
I went
You (singular) went down the stairs (les escaliers)
She went out
We were born
They (guys) entered
He died yesterday
MAKE SURE YOUR PAST PARTICIPLES AGREE WITH YOUR SUBJECT!!

Most verbs use avoir
Select few use être
Past participle must agree with subject when using être as helping verb in the passé composé.
EXAMPLE: elle est allée
There is no agreement when using avoir as a helping verb
