Eric Dycus Jan Halvorsen Catherine Nguyen Helen Vesser Solving the World’s Problems! Eric Dycus Jan Halvorsen Catherine Nguyen Helen Vesser

Vision To profitably extract valuable materials from end-of-life computers, monitors, and TVs Reduce landfilled electronics waste - National Safety Council estimates over 315 million computers will be obsolete by 2004 adding 8.5 million tons of waste. - Hazardous to water and air quality

Services Provide computer and monitor recycling services to environmentally conscious consumers and businesses in King and Snohomish Counties

Marketing Environment 33 million computers became obsolete in 2000 Computer sales increased by more than 23 percent per year since 1985 In King County alone, 335,000 computers are expected to become obsolete by 2005

Projected Sales & Market Share Estimated we could obtain 11,300 CPUs and 22,600 CRTs per year Projected revenue from recycling fees $280,000 from recovered materials $43,000

Products & Services Pick up service to retrieve used computers, monitors, and TVs at permanent collection sites Secure destruction service for unusable hard drives and other information storage systems Crush and grind up components in an environmentally friendly way Separate metals from glass in CRTs for reprocessing into raw materials

Process Diagram

Process Description Collection Location Sorting & Disassembling Charge $8 per item Location Facilities will be located in King County Sorting & Disassembling All computers will be assumed non-working

Process Description (Continued) Grinding PCBs first ground into coarse and then fine particles Grinders operate at 0.1 tons PCBs/hr CRTs placed in an Andela Pulverizer System which has a capacity of 5 tons/hr

Process Description (continued) Outsourcing Materials PCB grindings sent to Midwest Refineries in Michigan Aluminum and steel sold to Action Recycling in Spokane Plastics sold to Recycled Plastics Marketing in Redmond Leaded glass sold to CRT manufacturers

Equipment & Facilities Andela CRT Recycling System Two Pebble Mill Grinders Dust Collection System 24 ft. van for collection 10,000 ft2 warehouse

SWOT Analysis Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Combination of recycling of both computers and CRTs into one business Weaknesses No refurbishing Opportunities Expansion into other areas

SWOT Analysis (Continued) Threats Legislation must be passed making it illegal to dump CRTs in Washington landfills Legal barriers in transporting hazardous wastes

Finances FCI $220,000 DCFROR of 10% based on 15 years of operation This covers cost of equipment and property rental for one month DCFROR of 10% based on 15 years of operation Cash flow becomes positive after year 6

Staffing Plan Two operators for the Andela CRT Recycling System and for the grinders at $12.50/hr One truck driver at $12/hr Four full-time dissemblers at $10/hr Management Team

Major Assumptions Collection of 600 tons/yr of electronics based on a Massachusetts case study 33% each of CPUs, monitors, TVs Disassemble 3 pieces of equipment per hour Predicted growth of 15% CRT glass in monitor/TV is 25% of the total weight of the unit Tax rate of 30%
