About Arkhangelsk Arkhangelsk is one of the oldest Russian cities. It was founded in 1584 on the bank of the Northern Dvina not far from the place where it flows into the White Sea. Before the foundation of St. Petersburg Arkhangelsk was the only "window" to Europe and the only seaport. Situatied on the right bank of the Northern Dvina River and on several islands, the city amazes by its vast building scale and contrasts of its old and modern parts. During the last years the city has changed greatly. A lot of many-storeyed buildings and public cultural centers were erected. Arkhangelsk is one of the largest scientific and cultural centers in the European North. There are three higher educational institutions: Pomor University, Technical University and Medical University, many research institutes, concert halls and three theaters. Lots of tourists are attracted to the Museum of Regional Ethnography, the Art Museum and the Museum of Wooden Architecture. Arkhangelsk boasts woodcarving, bone-carving, decorative painting on wood, birch-bark processing, pattern weaving and embroidery, making clay toys and other folk handicrafts passed on from generation to generation. Foundation of NSMU Arkhangelsk State Medical Institute (ASMI) was opened on December, 16 th in 1932 for providing European North of the country with medical staff.
