About the Stentor The stenor ’ s body is usually a horn shape. Some reach several millimeters in length, making it one of the largest single celled organisms. They can also appear in different colors, for example blue or green. They usually live in slow moving fresh water lakes, ponds, or waste water treatment.

What it eats and how it survives Some species of stentors live with or on algae. After the stentor is ingested on the algae, it will absorb nutrients produced from the algae. The algae will, in turn, absorb and feed on the stentor ’ s metabolic waste. Stentors react to outside disturbances by retracting into a ball. Stentors are omnivores. Because they are so big they can eat both single - cellular and multi - cellular organisms

How they reproduce In DNA usually the macronucleus is responsible for the reproduction. But when to stentors meet, they may latch on to each other. But before they mate the macronucleus is destroyed and the micronucleus duplicates itself. Then the micronucleus exchanges DNA with the other stentor, making the reproduction.

How they move Cilia mainly cover the rim of the trumpet. Stentors also have many rows of Cilia covering there body, allowing them to swim and move through water to survive.

How they get rid of waste Waste materials are gotten rid of from the cell by diffusion throughout the cell. They are moved out of the cell by food vacuoles the come in contact with the surface.

How stentors respire ( breathe ) Stentors takes the water and intermingles it with it ’ s body and becomes oxygen directly from the water into there body.

How stentors grow Stentors are one of the longest single-celled organisms sometimes reaching one millimeter. Most people call Stentors trumpet but most don’t start that way. They only turn into the trumpet shape when they attach to the bottom of rivers or ponds.

Stentor’s senses Stentors have a sense structure called a stentorian, and it acts as a photo sensor molecule in the coeruleus. The protozoan is very sensitive to red lights. Stentors can also sense the direction of the light, this way they can avoid it when necessary. Stentors also have the sense of touch. When they feel danger they turn into a ball.
