Characters What are characters? Why are they important to stories? Who is your favorite character from a book or movie? Why? Peter Pan Clip

Protagonist A protagonist is the main character and the star of the action. Who is the protagonist of Peter Pan?

Antagonist An antagonist goes against or opposes the protagonist. The antagonist does not have to be a person. Who is the antagonist of Peter Pan?

Dynamic Character A dynamic character changes his values, personality, or outlook on life through the course of the story. You need to read the whole story to decide if a character has changed.

Static Character A static character stays the same through the course of the story. He/She does not change his/her values or personality.

Dynamic vs. Static If a cheerful, humble character inherits a million dollars from a rich aunt in a story and he stays cheerful and humble, he is static. If this same cheerful, humble character becomes bitter, resentful, suspicious, and selfish, he is dynamic.

Think about it The Wizard of Oz Clip Who is the protagonist of The Wizard of Oz? Who is the antagonist? Which character is dynamic?
