Scaling the Digital Landscape Introduction Changing the Learning Landscape Programme – a sector wide programme strategically supporting the use of technology within learning and teaching. NTU looking at Digital Practice as a core competence Higher Education Academy offering small scale funding for projects to look at elements of this. Opportunity to combine SCALE-UP project with broader CLL project.

Scaling the Digital Landscape Embedding Learning Technologies Opportunity to employ second year students to be Digital Skills Mentors to work on SCALE- UP module and with library to help understand digital literacy needs of students Focus on digital skills of students needed for SCALE- UP flipped learning approach. Library keen to understand how support for digital literacy/practice could change in library.

Scaling the Digital Landscape NTU Library Objectives Enable students as drivers of innovative practice by using students as agents of change in the form of Digital Skills Mentors To develop staff student partnerships and engagement to co-develop an agenda for change To facilitate the development of innovative strategy to engage with learning technology and provide direct support for students developing their digital literacy skills Aim To develop library IT/digital support services

Scaling the Digital Landscape Some observations and suggestions from the mentorsmentors Add voiceovers to off-campus access videos Dedicated IT support from mentors useful Dropbox Turnitin Some students expected workshops to be delivered by staff instead of student mentors Create smaller NOW guide to fit in induction wallets Passwords / logging on to resources Some students prefer peer support; others prefer staff expertise WiFi

Scaling the Digital Landscape Supporting digital skills in the Scale Up environment – large classes with team teaching support (including Library staff, Learning Support Coordinator and student observers)student observers The classroom project

Scaling the Digital Landscape Highly interactive classes using a variety of technology

Scaling the Digital Landscape Problems getting to grips with the Macs Not finding material on NOW Groups too large and noisy Sessions rushed Not understanding the task Not understanding relevance Term 1 observations

Scaling the Digital Landscape Using own devices and Macs with ease Following tutor presentations on NOW Smaller classes More individual support from tutor Focus on group projects Helpfulness of focus on referencing Term 2 observations and Evasys

Scaling the Digital Landscape Comparing student survey results: Summer 2013 and end of Term 1

Scaling the Digital Landscape What digital skills do students need? e.g. Evaluating internet sources What skills do you need to be able to help them? e.g. Technology enhanced learning & teaching What kind of teaching environment would be helpful? e.g. Group tables Laptops What support or resources would be helpful? e.g. Teaching assistants Wifi Over to you!
