At first Alvarez dislikes hearing her family name mispronounced and is uncomfortable when she is called Judy or Judith. In high school, she accepts her nicknames, believing they demonstrate her popularity, and she is uncomfortable when friends treat her name (and her) as if she were exotic. When she graduates from high school, she wonders what name she will use as an adult. The fact that she has chosen Julia Alvarez suggests her allegiance to her Dominican heritage.
