Positive Steps in Ayrshire and Arran Rebekah Wilson - Falls Lead

Objectives 1.Shift balance of care from reactive to proactive approach 2.Develop new ways to keep older people well and healthy 3.Increase our capacity to raise awareness about falls

Positive Steps...Aim to raise awareness of the factors which can help reduce falls Factors which impact on the risk of falling How to plan for a fall What to do if you have a fall How to feel safer and secure at home and when out.

5 Dr. H Hall 5 Positive Steps Learning resource box: Hand held teaching aids Laminated slides Training script Provides positive messages about the steps to take to avoid falls Delivered by Sheltered Housing Wardens as part of a cascade training programme – in informal settings, promoted conversations about falls prevention Participants encouraged and empowered to make small changes to lessen their risk of a fall e.g. – plan for the winter – take regular health and eyesight checks – stay active – eat a healthy diet

Dr. H Hall Development of Positive Step resource: Partnership Steering group and sector meetings: – Delivery model of the “Positive Steps” programme – Content of script, hand held slides – external critical and quality review – Format: semi-structured, informal, interactive, positive, fun – Source supportive material and compile the resource boxes – Launch (Osteoporosis Day, Oct 2010)

Evaluation Staff evaluation, Questionnaire and focus group. 57 questionnaires returned from training participants and 8 female residents engaged in the focus groups. Positively received Residents liked the informal style and enjoyed sharing and hearing other peoples experiences of falls Several weeks post training, a high majority of the residents were able to recall key actions to avoid falls and most importantly had altered their behaviour and had made personal choices in respect of home environment and lifestyles.

Next Steps with new resources the pack was redeveloped wider partners and wide range of professionals Health Information Standards for resource development Public Health Department Tested new prototype of the pack with people who would be delivering the positive steps awareness sessions and people who are at risk of falls. Focus group discussion to ascertain amendments to the resource

Pretest Pretesting took place between 27 th Jan and 12 Feb 2014 to six different groups throughout Ayrshire. Number of participants was varied in each group 38 people in total a range of 10 different trainers Feedback on content of the box The information booklet Amount and size of text Additional information on local services Suggestions for improvement welcomed
