Bellwork Assistive Bioengineering – Assistive technologies are developed to help organisms without changing them Adaptive Bioengineering – unlike assistive technologies, adaptive technologies actually changes the living organism

~The Basics~ Science and Engineering Science – refers to knowledge of the natural world Engineering – uses scientific knowledge to develop technologies.  *Scientists discover the world that exists; engineers create the world that never was*

Bioengineering Bioengineering – the application of engineering to living things such as plants and animals  Examples – plants designed to resist diseases, animals, or drought, grains. Assistive Bioengineering – Assistive technologies are developed to help organisms without changing them  Examples – wheel chair, crutches, canes. Adaptive Bioengineering – unlike assistive technologies, adaptive technologies actually changes the living organism  Examples – surgery, artificial hearts.

Quiz 1.What is Bioengineering? 2.What is Assistive Bioengineering? 3.What is Adaptive Bioengineering? 4.Give two examples of each type of Bioengineering. 5.True or False: An artificial heart is an example of Assistive Bioengineering.
