The Greenhouse Effect The earth’s atmosphere traps heat radiation from the sun. This warms the earth, so it can support life. Without the greenhouse effect, the earth would be about 30 degrees cooler. This all happens as a natural process.

Greenhouse gases. The main greenhouse gases are….. Carbon Dioxide. Methane. Ozone. Halocarbons. Nitrous oxide. Man-made CFC’s.

How the greenhouse effect works.

Since the industrial revolution, temperatures all over the word have risen. Since 1850 the temperature as risen by What is Global Warming? 1 degree. This may be caused by the burning of fossil fuels. These contain a lot of carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas. This may have increased the effectiveness of the greenhouse effect by forming a thicker layer. Also, trees have been cut down for power and to make room for industry. Trees take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere for photosynthesis. Without trees the levels of carbon dioxide increase, which may increase the global warming. Global warming maybe a natural event, temperatures have risen and fallen throughout history. It is difficult to predict the weather tomorrow, never mind the temperature in 100 years. However the amount of carbon dioxide has increased by 0.4 percent a year and if this continues it could have serious consequences for the planet.

What are the consequences of Global Warming? If the temperature rises by a level of two to six degrees, which may happen in the next 100 years, then the polar icecaps will begin to melt. This will cause widespread flooding, in low lying areas, such as of Holland, India, Bangladesh and area of Africa. If this happens millions will become homeless and die. Also crops and animals that we rely on for food will be affected.

How can we stop Global Warming? Stop burning fossil fuels. Not using CFC gases, instead using CFC substitutes. Don’t cut down trees. Co-operate with other governments to find alternatives to coal, gas and oil.
