Saint Andrew Patron Saint of Scotland

brother of Simon Peter a simple fisherman Saint Andrew

A man whose life was overwhelmed when Jesus entered his world.

As he was walking by the lake of Galilee he saw two brothers Simon who was called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were making a cast into the lake with their net, for they were fishermen.

And he said to them: “Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” And at once they left their nets and followed him.

Andrew spent the rest of his life following Jesus. As one of the twelve disciples of Jesus, Andrew was present at the Last Supper, witnessed the Ascension and shared in the gifts of the first Pentecost. After the Crucifixion, Andrew travelled the countries bordering the Black Sea and spread the Christian religion in Asia Minor and in Greece.

Little is known of Andrew’s life. It is uncertain where and how he died except that it was somewhere near the Black Sea. An ancient tradition says he was crucified on an X- shaped cross (now known as a Saint Andrew's Cross). He was tied to the cross where he remained for several days preaching to all who came to watch the execution.

He dropped everything else Saint Andrew responded positively when Jesus called on him. And gave his life To know, love and serve Jesus.

What is YOUR response When Jesus calls on YOU? “Come, follow me.”

LET US PRAY Saint Andrew, you were the first to recognize and follow the Lamb of God. As you led your brother Saint Peter to Christ and many others after him, draw us also to him. Teach us to lead others to Christ solely out of love for him and dedication in his service. Help us to learn the lesson of the Cross and to carry our daily crosses without complaint so that they may carry us to Jesus.
