Customer/Stakeholder Service Inform University students, faculty and facilities staff of Environmental Affairs policies and procedures Improve communication to students, faculty and facilities staff (4Ls, e-510, e-102, guidelines ) Publicize web page contents Respond to all inquires – present practical solutions Attend Department/Facilities Services/Planning meetings - ( Get and stay in the loop)

Hazardous Materials and Hazardous Waste Data Sheet LIDS, LABELS, LEAKS & LOCATION The most commonly cited violations of hazardous waste/hazardous materials regulations are: open containers or lids not screwed-on tight; improper labels/identification; lack of secondary containment, and waste storage location. What may seem as a relatively minor violation has resulted in fines of several thousands of dollars per violation. Observing these simple practices can keep The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) in compliance. ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH & SAFETY – (919) Steve Parker – Hazardous Materials Manager Fax Rich Miller – Environmental Affairs Manager –

Customer/Stakeholder Service Inform research community of current guidelines concerning lab moves Update web lab move guidelines & forms Participate in all building-wide planning sessions (know our clients personally) Publish articles in campus newsletters

Improvements to a Critical Process Participate in and/ or Develop opportunities to maintain 100% environmental regulatory compliance Be major player in all construction projects from planning stage to completion – Lab/Building cleanouts Audit waste broker TSDF facilities Work on back-end reports of e-510 program Follow up CLIP inspection reports (4L items) Conduct all remediation/stormwater activities following good engineering practices and sound environmental principles

Learning, Growth and Innovation Provide professional growth opportunities to the EA staff to attend a wide-variety of training, management, education, skill development and /or personal growth programs. CSHEMA, C/U Haz. Waste conference, ACHMM national conference and others. UNC, NC and Industry sponsored programs Encourage staff to acquire certifications and to make presentations at EHS in-service and external seminars Develop more interactions w/ other UNC system institutions

Financial Accountability and Performance Track all costs – insure spending state dollars in the most cost effective/end point manner Review outside consultant/vendor contracts Budget reduction opportunities from previous fiscal year are vigorously pursued Determine if unusual or exotic procedures and eventual disposal costs can be absorbed by the generator

Annual Performance measures 1. Bulb/ballast – track generating project – assign appropriate costs 2. Airport Road (Chemsite) and Mason Farm remediation projects and Stormwater Phase II permit implementation - track costs, timeline and environmental impacts - publish quarterly progress reports 3. Explore electronic pick-up request systems and create reports to determine both laboratory and chemical usage campus-wide (data sets should include benchmarking requests and basis for possible chemical reuse program). 4. Track customer interactions – website visitors, compliments and complaints - summarize response actions

Departmental Goals Create a work environment that encourages and rewards innovations, communication and teamwork Communicate actively with our customers (students, faculty, staff, citizens and visitors) to create responsive and responsible partnerships which ensures a first-class health and safety environment at the University. Provide increased education, communication and support services to maintain regulatory compliance and sound safety practices over environmental hazards and hazardous materials usage while minimizing cost
