What is IPTV?  IPTV does not mean that a person will log on to a webpage to watch their favorite TV shows over  “IP” stands for Internet protocol -method that will be used to send information over a secure network - the terminals can be computers or TV sets  Extra bandwidth will allow consumer to do several things at the same time - access, TV based caller id, etc.

How to receive IPTV  Service providers will create a fiber networks  Then place a box, called “residential gateway”  This will connect the computers, telephones and TVs with high speeds

Cost of IPTV  Consumer -$ for installation, plus the cost of set top box  Providers - cost of developing the fiber optic network - SBC planning to spend $6 Billion over next three years

Advantages vs. Disadvantages  Consumer - interactive TV experience - problems when trying to surf channels (single stream)  Service provider - utilize expensive bandwidth -government regulations  Advertisers -more personalized ads -fast forward capabilities

Current State of the Market  United States -one of the last adopters - FCC regulations prohibit -reach 1.17 million in 2005  Global Market -Asia leading and fastest growing -Europe follows, with France leading the market

Future of IPTV  Deepa Iyer states “ Every country is currently standing at a different position in the IPTV race.”  Provide customers with - high quality user experience - customization

Conclusion  IPTV unique experience  But the perceived value not as high  Will take a lot before customers will switch from cable to IPTV
