Domestication F After animals become domesticated, they become dependent on man F Most can’t survive in wild F Most poultry can’t fly F Sheep don’t shed wool F Cows produce 20,000 lbs milk / year F Birds produce 250 eggs / yr. (20 in wild)

Animal Use as Food F Meat - (muscle tissue) Beef, Pork, Lamb, Goat, Poultry F Milk - inexpensive source of protein –cheese, ice cream, yogurt F Eggs - pastries, mayonnaise, custards

Animal By-Products F Bones: buttons, glue, mineral supplement for livestock feed (Calcium) F Fat: chemicals, salves, creams, dressings, lubricants, soaps, food F Glands: medicines, food additives F Collagen: (connective tissue - joints) glue / gelatin F Intestinal & Stomach tissue: lunch meats, surgical sutures, strings for musical & sports instruments (contents = fertilizer)

Animal Use as Work F Cultivate land F Transportation F Control other animals F Assist physically & medically handicapped –Blind –Epileptic & Diabetic

Other Animal Use F Hides - leather F Hair - wool, mohair, fiber F Lab Animals - mice, rats, guinea pigs etc. F Pets

What is the future of Animal Science? F Embryo Transplant - can produce 20 calves from one cow per year F Cloning - using an animal cell to grow an identical duplicate animal F ??????

F Laboratory technical support F Animal caretakers F Research scientists F Genetics and Animal Breeding F Population genetics F Molecular genetics F Genetic engineering F Reproductive management F Endocrinology F Cloning/Embryo technology F Nutrition/Feeding programs F Veterinarian/Vet Tech F Nutrition/reproduction F Nutrition/health/immunity F Food Science F Product development F Food processing F Fermentation F Extension F Agriculture agents F 4-H agents F Teaching (all levels) F Feed/slaughter inspection F Private consulting Career Opportunities in Animal Science
