Rationale Technological developments Globalisation/ internatisation of economy – We need to prepare students for jobs that do not yet exist – We need to prepare students to live in a multicultural global world New challenges: – Skills that help citizen’s to cope with and contribute to society in the 21st century

Analysis of models of 21st century skills Partnership for 21 st Century Skills (P21) EnGauge Assessment and Teaching of 21st century skills (ATCS) National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) Technological Literacy Framework for the 2012 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) UNESCO European Union (EU) Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)

Research framework 21 st century skills (what has to be learned) How/ Where to learn 21 st century skills (formal/informal learning settings) How to assess 21 st century learning outcomes ICT

Implementation issues Drastic changes in curicula are needed; but how this has to be done is very unclear Among scholars there is agreement about pedagogy: active; collaborative; productive Assessment framworks are lacking ICT can enhance 21st century learning; we know how, but NOT how to implement it We hardly know how to scale innovative 21st century learning practices

Digital literacy Technological literacy: understand the interplay between technology and society ICT literacy: the skills needed to make effective use of technology Information literacy: The skills to make effective and efficiently use of information ‘ Digital Bildung ’

21st century skills in educational practice 21st century skills are often part of the rhetoric of policy makers Educational policy in North America/some European countries emphasises basic skills (reading, math) at the cost of higher order thinking skills Asian countries seems to see the need to invest in higher order thinking skills SITES studies show that increasingly school principals and teachers talk about 21st century skills, but do net change their practice

Issues Where and when to acquire 21st century skills: – Formal/informal learning settings and their interplay How to integrate digital literacy in the school curriculum? – Are students digital literate? Is equity an issue here? The need for assessment frameworks to determine if 21st century skills (also TWG5) Implications for Teacher professional development (also TWG 3) Do the developments towards 21st century skills create new divides worldwide? (also TWG 4)
