A New Paradigm for E-Groceries IS 485, Professor Matt Thatcher

Things to Note About this Case (Form and Presentation) l Description of the problem l Findings from the contextual inquiry l Discussion of the design solution and rationale l Presentation of usability problems and feedback uncovered during user testing l Discussion of recommendations

Initial Design Conceptualization (May 1998) l Electronic catalog of store products –graphical images of product categories (to match the physical catalog used with Collect & Go) –physical store layouts and walking the aisles

Contextual Inquiry l 2 visits to Safeway –asked Collect & Go customers how they put their orders together, likes/dislikes, problems l Findings –shopping is a chore –shoppers often buy the same stuff each week –key for shoppers is to save time –do not want home delivery –big problems when personalized list is unavailable –Collect & Go Shoppers are concerned they are missing out on new products and special offers –do not use the physical catalogue very much (focus is on the personal list)

Design Solution and Rationale l Abandoned electronic catalogue –based on contextual inquiry findings l New design (after several iterations) –expanding tab control »visibility, efficiency, saves space –5 lists »personalized list became the focus of the application »offers, ideas, loyalty points, order –functions »find, request, and specify delivery time and date –shopping basket metaphor »so the order shows up in 2 places (personal list and order tab) –no graffiti required

User Test Results (December 1998) l Users had problems: –parsing the screen –perceiving boundaries –confirming products were added to an order –using the Palm keyboard –making tapping errors (clicking on wrong areas)

Recommendations (This is very brief – see case for details) l Create a wallet card (short training) l Create better crucial distinctions for boundaries –thicker lines, better spacing, maximize dialog boxes l Tag items in lists with icons l Develop a custom keyboard –change keyboard to request l Better clues to confirm item added –visual and audio clue added l Increase tap-sensitive region around navigation buttons l Put icons next to items on personalized list

Let’s Talk About the Interactive Demo

Class Discussion l Alternative designs?
