2 Lesson 1 Basic Overview RIBBON The main command interface in Microsoft office 2013 is the ribbon. The Ribbon is a centralized location for accessing commands and functions.

3 Ribbon tabs command buttons File, Home, Insert, Design, Page Layout, References, Mailings, References, Mailings, ReviewView  The Ribbon consists of tabs, which each contain groups of related command buttons. The name of each tab appears along the top of the ribbon. There are 9 default ribbon tabs in Microsoft Word 2013. These are File, Home, Insert, Design, Page Layout, References, Mailings, References, Mailings, Review, and View. group  A group contains command buttons that have similar or related functions. dialog box launcher  Many groups have expanded options beyond the visible tab. In the bottom-right corner of these groups is a small diagonal arrow called the dialog box launcher when clicked opens a specific dialog box related to the command buttons displayed in the group. 4 On-Demand Tabs Office 2013 hides many commands until they are needed. This saves space on the ribbon. One method of hiding commands is the More button. Another method is through on-demand ribbon tabs. An on-demand tab, also called a contextual tab, is available when a certain object is selected or active and contains commands specific to that object. More than one on-demand tab may be available for given object. When a photograph is selected, there is only one on-demand tab available. Other objects may have multiple on-demand tabs available. When a Table is active there are 2 on-demand tabs available: Design and Layout. On-demand tab Active Object Layout options

5 Ribbon Drop-Down Menus A drop-down menu is a list of options or settings for a feature that is displayed by clicking the drop-down arrow button. In function, a drop-down menu is similar to the More button. In some cases, clicking the command button itself displays a drop-down menu. In other cases, the drop-down arrow button next to the command button must be clicked to display the drop-down menu because clicking the command button activates the command. 6 Quick Access Toolbar  The Quick Access toolbar is located in the upper-left corner of the screen above the ribbon. Selecting the drop-down arrow will give you more options to add to the quick access toolbar.  The Following are options you should Always have checked: New Open Save Undo Redo Print Preview and Print Spelling and Grammar

7 Getting Assistance Microsoft Office provides several ways to get assistance with a command or task. It provides intuitive assistance, help resources, and key tip badges. Intuitive assistance occurs when Microsoft Office attempts to understand what you are trying to do and automatically displays options.. Mini toolbar for an image Context-sensitive shortcut menus

8  Key Tip Badges The commands on the ribbon are most often displayed as buttons, each with an icon. An icon is a small image that gives the user a visual clue to the command executed by the button. Key tip badge, also called help text displays the name of the command and provides a brief description of the function it performs. It also shows the hot key for the command. A hot key, also called an access key, is a keyboard key or key combination that can be used to activate the command instead of clicking a button with the mouse. Key tip badge Hover the cursor
