3 Many Fellowship schemes that help SET professionals at various career points VERY few of these help genuine returners who have had a prolonged career break Often Schemes offer a quick fix or are a grant giving exercise The Daphne Jackson Trust

4 Some UK Initiatives and Fellowships: Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowships, Leverhulme Trust early career fellowships and research fellowships, Royal Society Relocation Fellowships, Open University T161 course, Research Council Fellowships. 5 Who was Daphne Jackson?  Britain’s first female physics professor  Lifelong campaigner, encouraging women into SET  She realised retraining needed after career break  Devised Fellowship scheme in 1985  Trust set up in 1992 in her memory

6 The Daphne Jackson Trust What is the Daphne Jackson Trust? Following the pilot scheme, which began in 1985, the Trust was set up as an Independent Charity in 1992 The Trust arranges Academic and Industrial Fellowships to enable SET professionals to return to their careers after a break

7 The Daphne Jackson Trust  The “foremost returners scheme” in the UK  Work highly praised as “exemplary” by the UK Government  182 Fellowships awarded to date  17 Fellowships awarded in 2007  20 Fellowships awarded in 2008  96% success rate of returning SET Professionals to SET careers

8 The Daphne Jackson Trust Daphne Jackson Academic and Industry based Fellowships….  Involve both updating skills and a Research Project  Are half-time and salaried  Normally last for two years  Are held in Academia or Industry where there is a Research and Development facility

9 The Daphne Jackson Trust Daphne Jackson Academic and Industry based Fellowship applicants….  Must have a first degree in a SET discipline  Must have worked in a SET career  Must have had a career break of two years or more  Must be resident in the UK  May be male or female

12 The Daphne Jackson Trust  Daphne Jackson Fellowships are individually sponsored.  Sponsors vary from academic institutions to large industrial corporations.  Daphne Jackson Fellowships are funded by Universities, Research Councils and Organisations with an interest in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET).

13 The Daphne Jackson Trust  Sponsors with an interest in the proposed research are ‘matched’ with Fellows  Many organisations both sponsor and host Fellows  Daphne Jackson Fellowships cannot begin until funding has been secured
