Cog166 Introduction to Cognitive Science

Day 1 Plan Introduction to Cognitive Science

What is Cognitive Science? Cognitive Science is the study of the mind which adopts interdisciplinarity and computational modeling as its two core values.

The Interdisciplinary Assumption The interdisciplinary assumption is the believe that understanding of the mind can best be advanced by studying it from the perspectives of several fields with an eye towards sharing significant insights.

The Cognitive Hexagon

The Computational/Represent ational Assumption The computational/representational assumption is the belief that the mind can best be studied when viewed in terms of representations and computations involving the representations.

Why the Computational Emphasis? The computer is central to the enterprise since computer modeling invites comparison to cognitive processing, provides an exacting interactive medium in which to formulate and test theories, and facilitates the collection of data for analysis.
