Weather Second Grade Created by, Jennifer Sagendorf Instructional Technology Resource Teacher Suffolk Public Schools October 2006

Weather is what the air is like outside.

How do you know what to wear each day? Do you know because your parents tell you what to wear or is there another reason for your choice?

Which outfit would you wear if it was snowing outside? Which would you choose on a hot, sunny day?

How can we make sure that we are prepared for the weather?

The weather report is done throughout the day on TV and radio news programs. It is also in the newspaper and on the internet.

People who study and report on the weather are called meteorologists. Meteorologists have special tools to help them track weather patterns.

They can measure how much rain has fallen by using a rain gauge.

A weather vane can tell which direction the wind is blowing.

An anemometer tells how fast the wind blows.

A thermometer tells if the temperature is hot or cold.

There are many types of weather. Sunny Windy Rainy Snowy Cloudy Foggy

Sometimes weather is more severe...and we need to be more careful.

Thunderstorms are fun to watch from a safe place.

Hurricanes are very large storms that can sometimes be dangerous.

Too much rain can cause a flood.

Too little rain can cause a drought.

A tornado is another form of severe weather.
