Projects Related on building control Monitoring  Fab Monitoring (Intel) Control  Philips Lighting (Ember Corp.) Light switch with sensor network  Irrigation (Digital Sun)  BACNet Demand Response  California Energy Commission and UCB  Using sensor network, notifies the varying electricity rate so that the consumers can schedule the usage.  Submetering each appliance using piezoelectric sensor (Prof White group).

Interoperability Traditional sensors  Proprietary protocol (Johnson control, Honeywell, etc).  Difficult to interface a sensor product to other products. Interoperability through standardization  Zigbee standard specifies the profiles for sensors like lighting, HVAC, etc.  Interoperability means more opportunity for a sensor manufacturer, especially, a small manufacturer.  IEEE 1451 (Smart Sensor) – plug and play for sensor.

Different sensor network types depending on power usage. Type 1: power consumption is not an issue  All the nodes are connected to power outlet.  Example: Fab monitoring (Intel) Type 2: every node is worried about power  All the nodes are running on battery power.  Example: Great Duck Island (UCB) Type 3: Two-tier architecture.  Tier 1 – Connected to the power outlet. Forwarder node.  Tier 2 – Leaf nodes running on battery. Concerned about power consumption.  Building control belongs to type 3.
