Energy related behaviours How do we use the available energy?

First step… Brainstorming! Individually, each student thought about his/her attitude concerning energy saving. Then, they were gathered in a meeting, to exchange ideas, stating their opinions on the subject.

Second step… The Search! In pairs, the students carried out a web search in order to obtain some information about the subject. After that, they reflected on everything new they had learned.

Third step… Painting the picture! The students applied a questionnaire to some of school’s community members.

What did we find out? 60% of those who answered the questionnaire do not reveal real energy saving postures. The majority does not make an effort to turn the lights off, when leaving a room at home. They did not turn off the stand by mode on the TV set and other electronical devices.

Despite the fact that Madeira Island is a place with nice weather and temperatures (causing the inexistence of central heating in the households), the truth is that, when it comes to using daylight to avoid lamps, closing doors to keep house warm, and other energy saving behaviours, people tend to forget them.

Another interesting information concerning this subject: the students revealed that neither their parents, nor their teachers, had ever persuaded them to adopt this kind of small steps towards a better and more sustainable future. Education and projects like “Keeping the Light On” are definitely the right track for creating this awereness!
