CREATE THE DIFFERENCE Welcome Maths and Applied Stats Maths half Applied Stats half Stafford Joints: Staffordshire University Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Technology

CREATE THE DIFFERENCE Faculty Joints Scheme  This is an opportunity to pick your own degree title from a wide range of half degrees that are on offer  What is a joint degree?  The study of two subjects rather than one in equal (or near equal) measure  Is it as good as a single honours degree?  It is different, but yes it is as good  You will not study one subject in so much depth but, instead, two subjects in half the depth  It means you have a broader education

CREATE THE DIFFERENCE General Academic Details  Typically there are 3 years of study plus an optional year in placement  A year has two semesters 12 weeks long  Typically study 4 modules per semester  Each module has 3 – 4 hours of contact per week  Students are expected to undertake100 hours or so of further independent study per module  Assessment is different for each module. Your maths/stats half will typically consist of a mixture of coursework, exams, and group work.

CREATE THE DIFFERENCE The Subjects Maths or Stats can be combined with The following joints website allows you to determine what other subjects maths and/or stats can be combined with other than each other: You can get detailed info on the subjects here.

CREATE THE DIFFERENCE The Levels  Level 1 – Tool kit Discovering independent learner skills  Study Skills  Level 2 – Development Honing independent learner skills  Level 3 – Graduate Emerging independent learner  Project

CREATE THE DIFFERENCE Maths Half - Some of the Topics Included  Modelling  Simulations  Calculus and differential equations  Matrices  Mechanics  Complex numbers  Operational research  Simulation  PRACTICAL BASED – MAPLE & EXCEL

CREATE THE DIFFERENCE Stats Half - Some of the Topics Included  Data types and presenting data  Probability distributions  Hypothesis tests  Confidence intervals  Correlation and Regression  Forecasting  Surveys  Experimental Design  PRACTICAL BASED – SPSS & EXCEL

CREATE THE DIFFERENCE Entry Requirements  240 points – which is typically  3Cs at A level  200 A level pts & 40 from elsewhere e.g. AS  BTEC national certificate DD/Diploma MMM  Access to HE Diploma  Allocate 40 points if successful interview  For Maths Half/Maths and Applied Statistics usually expect A-level Maths but do allow entrants with lower (e.g. AS Maths) if we believe the entrant will be successful (but must take extra catch-up maths module in Sem 1 Year 1)

CREATE THE DIFFERENCE Award Aims and Objectives  Application of mathematical and/or statistical tools to the analysis of a range of problems  Use of mathematical and/or statistical, and computer models  Develop skills in written, verbal, and visual communication  Preparation for a successful career requiring the practical application of maths and/or statistics  This award is not tasked with preparation for a career in research

CREATE THE DIFFERENCE Potential Careers  Statistician, e.g. government  Teaching  Insurance & actuarial Work  Health and pharmaceutical companies  Many graduate entry careers, e.g. computing, engineering, accountancy and finance  Any area that requires analytical skills, e.g. lean sigma, credit analysis, operational performance  Many other areas since maths/stats is respected for producing analytical and logical graduates

CREATE THE DIFFERENCE Maths and Stats - Further Information  If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact us at  The joints website allowing you to determine what other subjects maths and/or stats can be combined with other than each other and detailing the subjects is

CREATE THE DIFFERENCE An Exercise using Excel Throughout the maths and stats courses extensive use is made of software to aid modelling and analysis. Without these we would be quite restricted in what we can do. It would be difficult to apply the ideas met through the course to real (potentially large scale) problems and data. We will now consider a small scale problem to be modelled and analysed. We will use Excel to help us.
