Types of Foundations Corporate and Private Foundations –Provide funding nationally to charities where the funds are provided internally; usually do not try to attract outside donors Community or Regional Foundations –Each community foundation is made up of a collection of charitable funds that are established by various donors, then pooled and invested together, so that the income provides a continuing resource for the community.

Sample Website of Corporate and Private Foundation

Sample Web Site for Community Foundation

Basics The web sites of charity foundations generally give information about the organization ( mission stat, goals), programs, events, how to contact, how to help, annual reports, and FAQs Donors can announce the pledge through the web site of mostly the community foundations The web sites gives information about the supported charities and donors

Who are the customers Corporate Foundations Grantees – charity agencies who wish to receive funding from the foundation Donors – internal to foundation, no outside individual donors Community Foundations Grantees – regional/local charity agencies who wish to receive funding from the foundation Donors – individuals or local businesses who wish to contribute to the foundation

How to Attract Donors Advertise the foundation via a promotional video, and TV and radio Acknowledge the donors by listing the donors’ name on the web –Some want to be thanked for their contributions –Gives an incentive to donate for the potential donors Administer targeted funding (ex. Fund for child- development) Market to potential givers by holding promotional events Offer awards or honors to the frequent and high-valued donors Voting – general audience can vote on the project that the foundations are working on for more grants.

How to Attract Grantees Mainly based on already known reputation of foundation Show potential grantees of existing relationships with other charities Provide guidelines for application List the charities that the foundation is supporting Display the sponsor information and link to those sponsors

Value-added/Incentives For Donors & Grantees Potential donor/grantee saves time by avoiding phone calls and physical visits to retrieve information about the foundation Potential Grantee saves time by downloading and submitting grant application on-line Check for updates on promotional events or other activities scheduled

Value-added/Incentives For Donors & Grantees On-line access to customer’s account with foundation Be able to download or submit application on-line

How to get repeat customers Provide one-to-one marketing, offering each donor information, news, and opportunities tailored to his or her interest. Update the news or the publication of the foundation frequently Send to existing donors to keep them informed of on-going activities Allow existing donors to have privileged access to increased services offered through website

Recommendations Increase the donation channels through affiliation programs with other electronic commerce companies, such as Amazon.com –Per purchase, allocate certain amount of the cost to the foundation –Has a risk to turn a high-value donor to low-value donor. –For example, suppose every time a person buys an item from Amazon.com, Ford Foundation will match the purchase amount as a donation to a specific charity

Recommendations Host an on-line store that sells foundation t-shirts, caps, and bags and assign certain % of the price to the donation Sell/Auction the goods the recipients of the donation (ex. children, patients, seniors) made. Those goods will appeal to the donors. Include the recent success stories of the recipients of the giving, which will bring about the incentive to donate to the program

Recommendations Creating virtual communities who share the same interest and mission and get comments through bboard Grantee will be able to track the status of application/proposal Ability to renew grant applications on-line

An Ingenious Idea: A Virtual Foundation Why is it different? –Acts as intermediary between the donors and the charity allowing donor to directly donate to charity project –Any individual can donate on-line to any project at any amount –Allows donors to actively participate with charities via the internet
