Designing a multimodal technology to support science education PhD research Stamatina Anastopoulou

Research Questions: how can technology support learning about science? Where does science learners face difficulties? What is the existing contribution of technology? how can learners’ engagement and reflection be facilitated? what is the contribution of learners’ sensory modalities? in what ways interactions with technology can be enriched? what technological features are important? what activity-related features are important? How can we employ multiple modalities in the interaction?

Research walkthrough A comprehensive review of science learning, learning with multimedia and mixed-reality technologies. A categorisation of modalities and their contribution to learning. A theory-informed framework for multimodal interactivity. Three experimental studies to validate the framework and propose issues of significance, i.e. when multiple modalities are employed in learning, learners’ engagement and reflection are facilitated. fundamental guidelines for any designer of advanced learning technologies.
